Nissan is known for their exciting in-cabin musical experiences. There are people who actually choose Nissan just for the unique concert-like sound systems that come with models like the Altima, Titan, and GT-R. What people might not know is that there is a man affectionately dubbed "Golden Ears" who is behind the success of Nissan's memorable audio experiences.

Meet Nissan's Principle Engineer for Audio Sound Quality

Patrick Dennis has helped Nissan construct their complex and unforgettable in-cabin sound for almost 20 years. He's known as "Golden Ears" at the R&D facility he works at near Detroit. His long years of experience and natural gift for understanding sound make him a master at both premium and regular sound systems.

Dennis doesn't believe that he's been blessed with a natural gift, either, but he contributes his success to old-fashioned training. "It's that I've been trained to identify certain things in the music that other people might not be able to catch."

Nissan's outlook on in-cabin sound systems is unique in the industry. They strive for a "concert quality" sound that isn't easily found in the models of other brands. Dennis says, "We want the customers to feel like they're at a live show. That's the vision. We want to transport them there." One of their biggest challenges is the environment they're placing the sound system in. Golden Ears acknowledges that "a car is not an ideal space for an audio system. You're competing with noise from the powertrain, road, wind, and surrounding traffic."

Over the years, Golden Ears has discovered that software is invaluable in reducing noise in vehicles. He employs the use of Active Sound Management as a way to drown out engine noise and bring out the best in the music. Premium sound companies like Bose and Klipsch have partnered with Nissan for a while now, and they always help to make the most of sound management technology.

Patrick Dennis knows that when he gets the sound for Nissan's customer, it is just right. He says, "You have to work with the system to get it to pop. When it does, you know it - you feel that fun factor immediately."
