Federal EV Tax Credit

What’s Changing With the EV Tax Credit?

Federal incentives for electric vehicles are undergoing important updates. The Clean Vehicle Credit program, which provides up to $7,500 in tax savings, is scheduled to end on September 30, 2025, unless extended by Congress. In addition, the credit for installing a home EV charger will no longer be available after June 30, 2026. If you’re considering making the switch to an EV, it’s smart to review the latest program rules and act before these deadlines pass.

How Much Credit Is Available?

Qualified buyers can receive a federal tax credit of up to $7,500 when purchasing an eligible EV. The credit is split into two parts:

  • $3,750 if the vehicle meets critical minerals sourcing requirements
  • $3,750 if it meets battery component manufacturing criteria

If the vehicle only meets one of these requirements, the credit is reduced to $3,750. Vehicles meeting neither condition are not eligible for the credit.

Which Vehicles Qualify?

To qualify for the federal tax credit, a vehicle must meet all of the following:

  • Be new
  • Include a battery with at least 7 kWh capacity
  • Weigh under 14,000 lbs
  • Be manufactured by a qualified company
  • Have final assembly in North America

There are also MSRP limits:

  • $80,000 for vans, SUVs, and trucks
  • $55,000 for other vehicles

Finally, the seller is required to report the buyer’s information to the IRS to validate the credit.

When Do the Incentives End?

As of now, the Clean Vehicle Credit is set to expire on September 30, 2025. The home EV charger credit will expire June 30, 2026. Congress could extend these programs, but that remains uncertain. Buyers planning to leverage these credits should plan accordingly.
