The LEAF is a standout electric vehicle that ranks #2 in its class, which is impressive for such a competitive group of cars. The Nissan LEAF has many delightful features to begin with, but some new improvements have increased its popularity and competitive edge even more.
Fermata Energy Bidirectional Charger
One new change that Nissan recently introduced for the LEAF is a Fermata Energy Bidirectional Charger. This innovative charger allows the LEAF to draw energy from the grid but also sends energy back into the grid. The introduction of this novel charging function makes the LEAF the first electric vehicle in the US to be capable of sending energy to the grid along with drawing electricity from the grid.
The charger has some specific features and capabilities that add to its appeal. One is that it can store energy for later use or help owners save money by sending electricity back to the grid when it’s unnecessary. The bidirectional charger is also safe and has passed several industry standards, including UL and CHAdeMO. The charger has also passed Nissan’s requirements and is now approved for use in the LEAF.
The V2X Platform
Along with the Fermata bidirectional charger, Nissan is now using the V2X platform with the LEAF. This platform is an intelligent software platform that works in conjunction with the Fermata charger. The software platform works with the Fermata charger to help give the LEAF more power (up to 33%). It also meets industry requirements and has an optimized design that results in lower manufacturing costs and lower prices for customers. Along with the LEAF, the bidirectional charger and accompanying software system are being installed at Nissan dealerships, and they are also available for Nissan’s fleet customers. The new technology has no impact on Nissan LEAF’s warranty; it may have been available for use in LEAF models in 2013, depending on the state.
